The latest YouGov poll for The Economist has found a solid majority, 58 percent of Americans, agree that marijuana should be regulated and taxed just like like alcohol and tobacco. Almost as important, the poll found that only 23 percent disagreed with the idea of treating cannabis like alcohol. From the YouGov Poll:
Some people say marijuana should be treated like alcohol and tobacco. They say it should be regulated and taxed and made illegal for minors. Do you agree?
34% Strongly agree
24 Agree
19 Neither agree, nor disagree
7 Disagree
16 Strongly disagree
Not surprisingly, the poll found support was strongest among young people and lowest among senior citizens.
The wording used is very important. Americans are significantly more inclined to say they support “regulating and taxing marijuana like alcohol” than they are to say they support simply “legalizing marijuana.” This is a critical messaging issue marijuana reform activists should always keep in mind. This poll is also of the general population, which tends to be more supportive of marijuana reform than likely voters.
Even taking into account those factors, this is still an impressive level of support and one of the largest ever found in a national poll. Clearly, the general trend of Americans becoming more accepting of marijuana legalization is continuing and even possibly accelerating.

Congrats on getting placement on “The Good Wife” — made me proud to be an fdl pup.
What a coincidence! I just completed a poll and one of the questions was asking me if I favored legalizing and taxing marijuana. No points for guessing my answer.
I read an article from Care2 yesterday about all the possible disease fighting drugs which can be made form cannaboids.
Of course, the gov refuses to fund the research
Maybe that’s why it’s been so hard to legalize it. PHrMA doesn’t like competition for it’s poisons.
I’m certain that’s part of it. I’d rather use marijuana than any pain killer I’ve ever been prescribed and that includes demerol.
JUST SAY NOW!
OT: What a dick:
Obama to cut heat subsidies for poor
“Not surprisingly, the poll found support was strongest among young people and lowest among senior citizens.”
Actually, considering the senior citizens have most likely been smoking pot since their high school or college days and the young people have spent their entire lives getting beaten over the head with “just say no,” I DO find that surprising.
fifty three point six percent of American voters (if I remember correctly) supported progressive change in 1908. We didn’t get it. we don’t actually think we live in some kind of democracy, do we?
Pot is good for relaxing and that works on some kinds of pain, maybe even most. However, once in a while I have pain that needs something more specific to pain. A pain killer. Or blocker if you read futuristic stuff. *g*
Cool. But then the majority of Americans want to reign in the banksters, would rather support entitlement programs than cut taxes, and favor limits on pistol magazine capacities.
Expect to see legislation on any of that–ever? Until democracy is restored, the moneyed interests simply will not permit action at the national level. Hey keep at it, you’re fighting the good fight. But I think we should invest most of our efforts on local and state initiatives. Vermont may soon get to single-payer health care! No “unconstitutional” individual mandate required. All it takes is a few successful examples to overcome the wall of fear and deceit erected by corporations and their deluded reactionary stooges.
Some day Citizens United will be a sad memory, but until then, real democratic expression on the national stage is a fantasy. Local progress is the only hope for progressives now.
You remember 1908, arcadesproject?
On a serous note, are we not all Egyptians now?
Perhaps we need to decide if we really want a democracy?
And be prepared to stand up for it if we do?

Will you stand up for Democracy, even if it means letting the Republicans redefine rape or if it means letting Libertarian types reduce taxes to 10%?
I guess you hadn’t heard that our president doesn’t approve of abortion, or gay marriage or poor people.
That’s a positive development. Thank you for reporting on this, Jon.
That’s great. But most people who believe pot should be legalized don’t show up to vote. See: California.
I disagree with legalizing the brain altering drug. Lets tax the rich for a change.
Will this end the horror of drug testing by potential Employers? One of the worst side effects of weed’s illegality is that people (myself included) were deemed drug addicts on the basis of finding herbs like goldenseal & echinacea in drug tests. These were deemed ‘maskers’ & were used as grounds for termination. While I do use Marijuana, I do not use it all the time & those instances where I was denied employment were because I used the above legal herbs as a cold remedy. Yet in front of co-workers I was called a ‘Drug-Addict!’ by one of those prissy mouthed 40-yr old virgins with a face like he was sniffing vinegar. In another instance, a man I knew passed weekly Police drug tests (in re DUI conviction) but failed a drug test at a large retail corporation. In that same store, another employee routinely smoked a joint before a drug test & always tested clean, because management liked him. I do not know if Marijuana Legalisation will address these issues of employer drug screening. The way our legal system is set up, it might require separate legislation to distinguish weed from illegal drugs, as past practise may be invoked. Unlike Alcohol, which intoxicates if it is present in a test, Marijuana hangs around in a test for a month even if you do not partake prior to testing. The issue of ‘positive tests =intoxication’ must be dealt with, or drug testing will continue to be a tool of worker abuse.
Heh!
Because raising taxes on the rich might cause them to stop creating jobs! (For overseas workers, as they use the money from their tax breaks to ship jobs out of the country.)
If they are going to legalize marijuana and tax it, then they might as well keep going! Legalize prostitution and force them to stay healthy! Then there would be no need for ads in the paper for “private massage” and just think of the tax revenue just from the Republican politicians!!
No most of them do not!
I thought this was obvious with the vote in California, it makes the left look stupid and it alienates the average non political soccer moms out there.
Further I want to express how pissed off I am about how selfish everyone that pushes this is.
Every time regular everyday people get a chance to ask the president something via an online the contest is overrun by hundreds of identical cannabis legalization questions.
You are making it impossible for other concerns to be heard. There are thousands of homeless people out there and people loosing their houses everyday. These are more important right now!
PS Scientists do not agree that it would be a good idea to make it legal. In fact they are upset that the left is manipulating the facts about it.
Except you would pose a danger on the road. Thats why most pain killers are not as effective as smoking.
That last Youtube “ask the President” was f*cking ridiculous. The economy in a shambles, people losing jobs and homes, and all the majority on there wanted was to legally smoke weed? Maybe it’s past time everyone was given internet free. Then maybe the real poor could stagemanage these address the President moments. To the world, it made the average US citizen look like a total idiot. Ya, I would still have my job if they just legalized drugs/prostitution/bank robbing. It does blow the mind. Personally, I don’t care one way or the other. I know literally hundreds of people that smoke it regular. People that society would never even think would. So how is it illegal stopping it? It isn’t. So if legalized, would be the same thing. People STILL would not pay taxes on it, unless the gov’t itself sold it. But I’m sure all those people unemployed and losing their houses would be much better off if they just legalized a drug.
For me, the jury is still out so I continue to test. I’ve been testing for over 40 years now and I am still not sure. Opps, it is time to test again. Currently, I am testing Oregon Pinot Noir. Later today I will be testing Deep Purple and LA Confidential. Variety is the spice of life.
ToyotaBedZRock your ignorance is showing. You should not talk about something you have no real knowledge of. All you seem to know is the government line that claims that “Marijuana Madness” is the real thing. I speak from personal experience. Where do you speak from? Out your ass maybe?
