Passing this contributes toward a tipping point where the Feds will eventually relent. The more states, the better. It's about public support on the ballot and, of course, the revenue prospects.

It seems to me, however, before the revenue bucks start flowing the next step will have to be more states adopting the same or similar measures. A critical mass of support will be needed before DC reconsiders, no?

Here in Mass there will be a med MJ initiative on the ballot in Nov. We had a decriminalization measure (a different angle) which passed a few years ago. At that time the the most outspoken opponents were in law enforcement, which seemed odd at the time since it's not their job to set state policy but to enforce it. Anyhow this time opponents seem more vocal among doctors, less so among police, since it's a med MJ measure. -- I think the docs are queasy about being drawn into a controversial issue not yet sanctioned at the Fed level, and a lot of them simply don't want any latitude with MJ. Many may feel conflicted but do, after all, have a professional survival instinct.

The Mass initiative doesn't have an aura of hysteria, unlike last time, and I'd bet it will pass handily. The legislators will let it fly if there's substantial support for the measure, the opponents among them may bank on the Feds continuing to say, "No," for them, so they can move on to something else.

Hopefully it passes. With states as hard up for revenue as they are, I think one or two test cases where legalization results in increased revenues and no significant increase in crime could start a nationwide wave.

The impact to Oregon has been estimated to be 250-300 million in revenue per year. I'll bet it's higher. Pun intended.
